REYLO: Rewrite the Stars

Rey is trying to get off the Star Destroyer called The Finalizer. She knows who commands this ship and she’s not sure she can face him today. Not after their last encounter left her broken. She felt emotionally drained from their previous encounter and it had taken days for her to try and put back together pieces of her broken heart.

She moves through the ship trying to find her destination and slips around Stormtroopers; using her Jedi training to manipulate them into letting her pass when she can’t remain unseen. It was meant to be an easy mission, get on the ship, intercept data and get off. She had volunteered herself, knowing she would be the only one who could successfully escape. The Commander of this ship won’t truly let harm come to her.

The walls are dark and shiny, making it difficult to blend into the passages, when her entire outfit is the color of dunes. She races through corridors to get back to her ship, and back to her friends.

As she slips around a corner, she notices a tall figure. She finds herself inevitably, facing Kylo Ren. Clicking her sabre on, it hums to life at her side. She’s unsure what his intentions will be this time now that their paths have unfortunately crossed.

He speaks first and she’s taken aback, “You know I want you.” His tenor voice carries down the hall. “It’s not a secret I try to hide.”

Rey braced herself for his words, but this is a conversation she was not expecting. She knows how he feels, only because of the connection through the Force. His emotions ripple into her everytime they link through the bond. She just never expected him to be vulnerable with her again. “I know you want me.” She affirms his deepest desire to him, trying to keep the sadness out of her voice. His broken, scarred face focused on her.

“So don’t keep saying your hands are tied.” His voice is low as he steps toward her.

She knows he’s talking about her loyalty to her friends, to the rebels.

“You claim it’s not in the cards.” He keeps stalking toward her, his sabre glowing red, giving his body a devilish hue. His voice breaks now, ‘Fate is pulling you miles away and out of reach from me.” He punches his chest with a gloved fist and Rey flinches. “But you’re here in my heart…” He watches her closely. “So who can stop me if I decide that you’re my destiny?” His voice is passionate, but angry, trying to convey to her how he feels.

“Ben…” She is tentative to speak, not wanting to upset him further.

“What if we rewrite the stars?” He reaches his hand out to her, waiting for her to take it this time.

Rey steps back more and grief flashes across his face, chased away by rage.

“Say you were made to be mine!” He yells. “Nothing could keep us apart.” He’s breathless and lifts his sabre up. Rey brings hers up, twinning his movement as panic rises in her gut.

His face softens at the fear rolling off her, “You’d be the one I was meant to find.”

“Ben, it’s up to you, and it’s up to me. No one can say what we get to be.”

His eyes narrow, as if he’s looking for the trickery in her words. He sticks his hand out again to her, with wary eyes. “So why don’t we rewrite the stars?” He asks her again. “Maybe the world could be ours. Tonight.”

“Ben.” Her voice pleads and she feels tears brim on her lashes. “You think it’s easy? You think I don’t want to run to you?” She gestures around the room, the blue sabre sweeping with her arm, “But there are mountains and there are doors we can’t walk through.”

“No.” He yells, his frustration breaking out of him like a dam. He slashes at the walls of the corridor. Rey throws up the arm holding her lightsabre to stop sparks and parts of the wall from flying into her. Her heart breaks to see him like this.

She yells over the din of noise, trying to get his attention. “I know you’re wondering why, because we’re able to be just you and me within these walls.” She points to their heads and the space between them, explaining the connection to the force they have built . “But when we go outside, you're going to wake up and see it was hopeless after all.” The rebel alliance would never accept him, even with the sway Leia carries as a leader.

“No one can rewrite the stars.” She says sadly, avoiding looking at his eyes. He’s standing so still and has gone quiet listening to her. How can you say you’ll be mine? Everything keeps us apart.

She makes a mistake not watching him, lost in her thoughts, he’s closed the space between them. His tall, dark frame in front of her, she has to crane her neck to see him now.

“And I’m not the one you were meant to find.” His voice is soft and an octave deeper as he gazes down at her.

Rey flicks her sabre off, pushing her palms into his chest. She’s met with a wall of muscle and he doesn’t budge.

“It’s not up to you. It's not up to me.” She roars at him, the tears breaking down her face now, frustrated with his lack of understanding. When everyone tells us what we can be. Her whole life she’s been told she’s nothing and he's been told he is powerful, groomed to be the Supreme Leader. It’s hopeless and she knows it, he should know it too. Kylo Ren doesn’t have the answers she seeks from him.

“How can we rewrite the stars?” Rey says quietly, avoiding his gaze once more.

He doesn’t say anything for awhile. Just his steady and haggard breath the only sound besides the sparks of the shattered wall. A mirror of Rey’s heart in the moment.

“Say that the world can be ours.” The same words he begged to her before. “Tonight.”

She flinches and shakes her head. “All I want is to fly with you. All I want is to fall with you.”

“So just give me all of you.” He interrupts.

“It feels impossible.” Rey shouts.

“It’s not impossible.” He fires back.

“Is it possible?” Rey says softly, looking at the ground.

“Say that it’s possible.” Ben beseeches her with his words. He places a finger under her chin, pulling her face up to his so that they’re so close they share the same air.

“How do we rewrite the stars?” Rey demands from him, looking up into his handsome face.

“Say you were made to be mine.” He says, as if it were truly that simple, to give herself to him. He told her once she was nothing. Now he wants to offer the galaxy and more. “Nothing can keep us apart. Cause you are the one I was meant to find.” Rey cringes internally at his desperation to hang onto a half truth. The Force may be keeping them together, but it was Snoke who manipulated the bond in the first place. Using their loneliness to tie them to one another, two halves of one soul.

He continues talking, his voice laced in despair. “It’s up to you. And it’s up to me.”

“No one can say what we get to be.” Rey says to him. Not Snoke, not the Force, not even Kylo Ren can decide who Rey will be. She needs to do what is right for her. She needs to protect her friends and all they fight for.

“And why don’t we rewrite the stars?” He implores her, repeating these words again to sway her.

“Changing the world to be ours.” Rey says to him, clarifying what he means. Because if she took his hand now, like this, it would change everything. She can’t take Kylo Ren’s hand.

“You know I want you.” He tells her, letting her see where his heart lies. But does he want her for her? Or for her power? “It’s not a secret I try to hide.” He watches her, waiting for what she will decide. She does not know what his reaction will be.

“But I can’t have you.” Rey says, parts of her words are true. “We’re bound to break and my hands are tied.” She turns to walk away and he lets her this time. She slowly backs away, waiting to see if he will let her go. He makes no move toward her and she breaks into a run to the hangar where she knows her ship is. Parts of Kylo Ren may let her go, but she can’t waste time letting him change his mind. She needs to get back to the Rebel base. She stops at the door and turns around to look at him. It may be the last time she sees Ben Solo. He looks like a dark shadow, statuesque in the bright walkway as he stares at the floor, as if the answers are written there. Something tingles in her mind at the same time he looks up. His fingers twitch at his side. She gives a sad smile and disappears through the door.
