Escaping from Houdini: Review, Quotes and Thoughts

“Truth is often compared to a blade, I question those who marvel when it pricks.”

I have so many thoughts I want to get out about this book. I can’t even imagine what the final book, Capturing the Devil, will bring for Audrey Rose and Thomas Cresswell. Seriously two of my favorite bookish couples.

Three years ago, I found the first book in the series, Stalking Jack the Ripper, at a used bookstore while I was at a festival. It cost me $7 and I took a while to get to reading it. Once I did, I was hooked and immediately bought the second book after finishing the first. However, I read a negative review about Escaping from Houdini, so I held off on buying it. Until I joined bookstagram and everyone praised that it was actually good. Thank goodness I listened. Then I had to wait for the next book and hopefully it’ll be on my doorstep next week!

Why I love the characters SO much:

“I was a terrible wanton thing getting so distracted by Thomas’s lips.” [excerpt from, Escaping from Houdini]

And then our heroine on her own is delightful. The above quote makes me giggle; her overuse of ‘wanton’ makes this story even more adorable. Despite the horrible murders occurring around them. If you didn’t know, these books are set in the 1800s and it wasn’t ‘proper’ to display physical affection or to be alone without a chaperone in the presence of the opposite sex.

“We women could be called creatures, if only the men who said such careless words accepted our claws were fearsome things when we decided to scratch.” [excerpt from, Escaping from Houdini]

Also, she’s a feminist, little badass and doesn’t put up with being put in a box. This book did have a bit of a love triangle, which isn’t my favorite. However, it did work for this story and it was an arc that Audrey Rose needed. I felt like it enforced her character's beliefs and understanding of the world.

Thomas and Audrey Rose as a couple is my favorite thing to read.

“...Thomas offered me the sort of appraising look that set my blood aflame. There was no greater feeling than being admired for my brain.” [excerpt from, Escaping from Houdini]

I mean, I think this quote says it all. What girl doesn’t want to be loved for her brain? And then to have a loving, doting, supportive (handsome) man appreciate her for that before her beauty. Hello, I'm here for it!

Thomas’ love for Audrey Rose is so pure and hopeful.

“If you wish to go, I’ll never make you stay. I might not do and say the proper thing all the time, but I do know that I love you enough to set you free.” [excerpt from, Escaping from Houdini]

So sweet. In the first book, it’s the slowest burn between them and he right off the bat loves her for her forensic mind. Lots goes down in Hunting Prince Dracula, very steamy and it’s so fun to read.

But in this book, Thomas Cresswell says things like this and it just solidifies him as a very ‘rootable’ character.

I just can't wait to see what happens in the final book of this series!!

Share with me some of your favorite Stalking Jack the Ripper moments.
