September Mini Reviews!

September Wrap up

Just a quick little review of the books I read this month, no spoilers, just my thoughts.

A Touch of Ruin by Scarlett St. Clair

This is the second book, after A Touch of Darkness; whereas I loved the first, this one left me a little disappointed. The first book was full of firsts and tension and was building to something. The second book could have been much shorter if the main characters would have just communicated. That’s always an annoyance for me when reading when all the problems in a book are because a couple are not speaking to each other. It was still fun, the steamy scenes were good and I will definitely get the third one when it comes out to find out what happens.

3/5

Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust

I mostly consumed this book as an audiobook because the narrator was ah-mazing! The story is sooo good. It definitely has a great message for girls, about being our own hero and not letting others control or decide our future. It’s based on Persian mythology and I really enjoyed that! I’ve also seen it described as ‘an alluring, feminist fairytale’ and doesn’t that just make you want to pick it up and read it!?

5/5

Once & Future by Amy Rose Capetta & Cory McCarthy

My Wick and Jane Candle Book Club, book of the month. I just wanna say first, this book club is so fun and they pick great books!

A Sci-fi, futuristic retelling/revamping of Arthur and Merlin! Need I say more...Yes! Because Arthur reincarnated is a little badass female. This book has great representation, fun characters and a compelling plot. I only docked it a star because the pacing was a little skewy and that threw me off while reading.

21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act: Helping Canadians Make Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples a Reality by Bob Joseph

Every single Canadian should be reading this book. We should be reading and understanding the atrocities that were put upon the First People of Canada and we should learn how we as a group can rectify a very troubling history.

5/5

Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin

My most anticipated read of the year. I still love the characters oh-so-very much and I enjoy the author's writing style. I just found this book's plot lacking, it felt like nothing really happened until like thee.very.end. And then the ending made me sad soo…. And again, the couple's problems all revolved around not communicating. So do you see a theme here for me. I’m definitely still so excited to see what happens in the third book when it comes out!

3.5/5

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Read this book! Oh gosh, it was so cute and so fun and the main characters: Henry and Alex are so sweet. In the author’s notes she mentions she wrote this after the 2016 election, and I loved how she reflected a better world with a different leader.

The romance in this story is so great and you’re rooting for them at the very start. Not a true ‘enemies to lovers’ trope, but still fun.

5/5

Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco

This is the third book in the Stalking Jack the Ripper series and Thomas Rose and Audrey Hepburn are one of my otp’s (are we allowed multiple?). Okay, so in this book there’s some lack of communication, but it’s legit warranted and the protagonist has a chance to explore her feelings so I’m here for it. I also have a full review on my blog, just below this one. I really enjoyed this book and I adore the characters, can’t wait to see what happens in the final book.

5/5

Aurora Burning by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

The second book in The Aurora Cycle series and I found it just as enjoyable as the first book. But the plot twists and cliffhanger in this book are not okay folks. The plot isn’t super ‘original’ however for what it is, it’s a very fun read. And for me, I’m here for the characters. I love them all and they each get their own POV chapters which makes it fun to get to know the characters. Anyways, I have no idea where the next book is going and I Am Scared.

4/5

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed all your reads, and have a fantastic October! I’ve got some fun, spooky reads planned.
