The Threat Below: Review

Are you looking for a unique, new take on a YA Apocalyptic story line? This book is definitely for you! Thank you to the author, Jason Shetlaw, who sent me his books to read and review. I’m going to give a brief synopsis and then my thoughts on the story. I will keep it free of spoilers.

Synopsis

Set 300 years after the fall of humanity, the story follows the protagonist 17-year old Icelyn Brathius. Her family leads a group of people living atop a mountain as the world below is full of danger. The water supply in Mountain Top becomes poisoned and Icelyn is one of the few members to travel below to find what’s wrong with the water source. As they descend, not everything is as it seems. Surprises, mystery, traumatizing history surfaces and with the help of her friends Icelyn must make some big decisions. Decisions that will alter life on top of the Mountain.

What I enjoyed:

The story is fast paced with multiple points of views! It actually alternates between third and first person point of views throughout the book and at first it threw me off, but it really worked for this book! And I liked Icelyn’s sense of humor and internal dialogue. The plot was fun and there were many unexpected twists that made me wonder where the story was going. I love to be surprised and totally miss the mark on trying to predict plot points.

There’s a small love triangle that I actually enjoyed and added some banter to the story.

The ending was great. There is another book in the series, and I think this book is fine as a stand alone too. However, I’m curious to see where Icelyn’s next adventure takes her in this new world.

Final Thoughts:

I was not a huge fan of Icelyn’s character arc near the end of the book, I can’t say much without ruining the book, but she did annoy me a little bit. She had some redemption near the end, but I wasn’t a huge fan of her behavior. She did a complete 180.

The ending goes fast and so much happens! It was really fun to read and hard to put down. Like I said, I just didn’t know where the story was going, but it was fun!

Rating:

I gave the book 3 stars on good reads. At the end, I just remember feeling really frustrated with Icelyn, the main character. And I love a character driven plot, so I feel like I rated it based on that. I do recommend this book though. It’s a fun read!

Thanks for reading! Have a lovely day <3
