This month was weird! Did anyone else feel that? I enjoyed the books I read, but I consumed so many too fast and then we petered out near the end. I actually enjoyed every book I read this month! Lots of emotions. I was also super generous with my ratings. That and the books were great :) So here's a mini review of each book:
Empire of Storms
The fifth book in the Throne of Glass series. Lots happens! Like the first 75 pages in and I was gasping. Unfortunately because of my activeness on bookstagram I had stumbled across a few big spoilers for this book ANNND I still cried at the end. I grew to love Aelin and company even more with this book. I don’t think there’s a character I don’t like. And Elide and Lorcan are OTP. 5/5
Aurora Rising
I read this book purely out of uncontrollable curiosity. I borrowed it from the library because I wasn’t totally sure, and although I enjoyed it, I’m okay with not spending money on it. There’s nothing new and shiny about the plot, but I ended up enjoying it for the characters. I do love a rag tag crew bound by ‘duty’ and ‘friendship’ to save the galaxy. The story is told in multiple POVs which I didn’t mind, there were some I enjoyed more than others, but that’s a given. If you love sci-fi and want a quick, easy read this is a great book to go to.

Soul in Darkness
I have a full review for this book in another post, because it needed it’s own spotlight. I loved it! It’s a retelling of Psyche and Cupid from Greek mythology and it’s done in the accurate time period and land and just so elegantly written. It’s considered YA and the ‘smut’ only happens in the middle so it doesn’t consume the story like some books. I definitely recommend if you’re looking for more retellings of mythology.
5/5
Trail of Lightning
I read this book for the Wick+Jane book club and it was fun discussing it with others. There’s so much that happens! The world building is exquisite and the characters are so real and raw! It’s written by an indigenous author and the setting is post apocalyptic and the protagonist Maggie has clan powers that help her fight monsters that have risen because of the apocalypse. The pacing of the plot was the only issue for me, I wish it had more, but I did like the little twists at the end and the lore and mythology woven into the plot.

With the Fire on High
I consumed this book as an audio book and if you can do it that way, I highly recommend. The author narrates and she just makes her story come alive in a gorgeous way. This is an own voice, coming of age story about Emoni. She is a senior in high school, an amazing, blooming chef, living with her abuela and raising a two year old daughter. The book explores some big themes and has a cute romance subplot tied in. I found this character just very mature and wise for her age, which teenagers totally can be and we should expect that more in our young protagonists. As a mom, I was able to connect to the character on a different level and I love the way she embraced motherhood. Even if you don’t have kids or plan to have kids, you should read this story.

A Darker Shade of Magic
This book was a re read for me this month! The first time I read it was in 2015, so that’s long enough to forget most of what happens but still have a familiarity when reading the book for a second time. The magic system in this book is well established, articulate and easy to understand. The world building is also so cool! I love the idea of parallel universes and the concept was well executed in this book. I love both Lila and Kell as a duo. I don’t ship them romantically, but I like the friendship they’ve built. Lila is a firecracker and a fighter and I am here for it. I can’t wait to see where this series goes.
4.5/5
Tower of Dawn
The sixth book in the Throne of Glass series, and it’s about Chaol going to the Southern continent for reasons I don’t want to spoil if you haven’t read. I went into this book still loving Chaol and ready for him to get his redemption arc. I felt like if you love Chaol this book reaffirms that and you finally feel like he gets to live and be himself. If you were angered by his character from previous books, you’ll love his arc.
Aside from Chaol, the other characters in this book are well developed and so lovable. The world building is so different from Erilea and it’s very refreshing.
5/5
The Rise of Skywalker: Expanded Edition
If you love Star Wars this book is for you. If you love Reylo this book is definitely for you! I just loved all the little in between moments and insights we don’t get from the movie that were included in the narrative. Yeah, basically if you loved the movie and want a little more, check out this book.
